Survival game Icarus reimagines boss encounters alongside new Great Hunts DLC

Savage, post-apocalyptic survival game Icarus is already a sprawling endeavor, but it’s about to transform the way you approach boss fights as a new DLC arrives. RocketWerkz, the studio founded by DayZ creator Dean ‘Rocket’ Hall, is preparing to bring new paid DLC Great Hunts Campaigns to its open-world survival crafter alongside a free update that it promises will “enhance how everyone interacts with bosses in Icarus.”

Big battles have become increasingly prevalent in some of the best survival games, creating memorable moments in everything from Valheim to Once Human. Icarus has you facing off against all manner of beasts, ranging from legendary mammoths to giant Dune-style sandworms and big bugs that would feel right at home in Helldivers 2. Its new DLC aims to build much more structure around its climatic encounters, however, along with some new threats to put you to the test.

The Icarus Great Hunt Campaigns expansion introduces a series of nonlinear mission sets featuring unique storylines for tracking each major foe. You’ll run into branches with mutually exclusive options that force you to decide your approach, with the choices you make affecting “creature spawns, loot drops, unique crafting recipes, boss difficulty, and more.”

Once you finally pin down their location, every boss must be faced in their own domain, meaning you’ll have to go up against the odds in true Monster Hunter fashion. There will be three hunts to begin with: Quarrite on Olympus, Gargantuan on Styx, and Rimetusk on Prometheus, but RocketWerkz says to expect more in the future as additional content is introduced to the base game.

Concluding a hunt will unlock more bosses to fight, each featuring their own unique abilities. You’ll get some highly valuable materials from them all, too, allowing you to craft a series of powerful new legendary weapons featuring “four upgrade slots from three themed upgrade paths, leading to 81 unique combinations per weapon.”

RocketWerkz also notes that the new Great Hunts Campaigns DLC is “not essential, and a lot of base game mechanics will be updated for free.” Existing enemies such as the Black Wolf, Sandworm, and Scorpion Boss will be included in the update, introducing currencies, planetary equipment, and legendary weapons.

There’s no date yet for the Icarus Great Hunts Campaigns DLC, but RocketWerks says it “will soon be available,” so keep a close eye on the game’s Steam store page to see when it arrives.
