Rockstar Games launches an official mod marketplace

Rockstar Games has launched Cfx Marketplace, a modding market for the multiplayer roleplay servers RedM and FiveM.

Cfx Marketplace is officially described as a “curated digital storefront where talented FiveM/RedM creators can share and sell their work.” Its official kick-off took place on January 12, and at the time of publication, includes mods from selected creators—about 16 of them, with another six “coming soon.”

Some mods on the marketplace are available for free, but most of them are premium. Mods like the “Theme Park DLC” cost $129.99, and creator packs can go for up to $389.99.

The launch makes for a significant cap off to a decade-long history between Rockstar and the community behind these servers (FiveM is for Grand Theft Auto V, while RedM is for Red Dead Redemption 2). In 2015, both Rockstar and its parent company, Take-Two, said the FiveM server was “an unauthorized alternate multiplayer server that contains code to facilitate piracy.”

Yet, in 2022, the developer released a statement in support of Grand Theft Auto Online’s roleplaying servers, calling them “an extension of the rich array of community-created experiences” within the game. It also took the opportunity to outline certain restrictions, such as servers being unable to feature “commercial exploitation,” meaning players aren’t allowed to sell in-game items for real world money.

Then, a year later, Rockstar acquired the community roleplay team Cfx.re, which is the group in charge of the aforementioned servers. At the time, the developer claimed the acquisition would help Cfx.re “find new ways to support this incredible community and improve the services they provide to their developers and players.” Simultaneously, Rockstar gave its approval to mods created by roleplayers from each of the two communities.

In its own statement at the time, Cfx.re called the acquisition “a huge step forward in the growth of our community, and an opportunity for us to work with Rockstar Games to advance the FiveM platform and the creative community surrounding it.” A day after Rockstar launched the marketplace, a group of former Rockstar workers who claim they were fired for unionizing were denied interim pay at a preliminary UK employment tribunal after choosing to challenge their dismissal in court.
