Driveloop Survivors turns Mad Max into a chaotic, top-down horde shooter

The mesmerizing hordes, huge lineup of characters, and flashy weapons of Vampire Survivors make it one of the greatest bullet hell games we’ve ever seen. Many have tried, with mixed levels of success, to emulate its addictive chaos. Driveloop Survivors is the latest, and as the name suggests, it puts a vehicular, Mad Max-esque twist on the formula. Blending an Art Deco aesthetic with apocalyptic environments and barrages of flashy weapon effects, it’s now available on Steam thanks to its early access launch.

In Driveloop Survivors, you get behind the wheel of some highly weaponized cars in order to explore devastated European cities like Berlin and Paris. While they lay in ruins, you’ll pass Art Deco architecture in similarly styled battle cars that, at a first glance, might not seem like the right kind of vehicle to take on the hordes of bloodthirsty robots that have taken over the continent. However, you’ll soon get them kitted out with guns and learn how to boost, drift, and ram your way out of sticky situations.

To begin with, you’ll get to choose from two different vehicle types with unique abilities and skill trees that you can progress through to unlock even more devastating powers and weapons. You can also recruit from a lineup of five crew members, which again come with bespoke weapons and skills that will further bolster your arsenal. Spare Parts can also give you an advantage, as collecting them during each roguelike style run will further boost your loadout. Developer Stunbyte will be expanding your options throughout early access, but right from the start there’s already plenty to contend with.

As well as slaying the relentless and massive hordes of enemies (just look at that unit density) there are also boss encounters as well. At the start of early access, there’s just the one boss battle, but again, more are on the way as it builds up to 1.0. This looks like a really stylish and intense take on the Survivors formula, and a roadmap outlining everything Stunbyte intends to add to the game will be arriving in the very near future.

Driveloop Survivors is out now in Steam Early Access. From now until Wednesday, April 23 you can also grab it with 11% off, making it just $8.89 / £8.00.
