Have you ever dreamed about hopping into a Minecraft rocket and soaring off to join the ranks of the best space games? Then look no further than Cubic Odyssey, because Atypical Games has made that concept a reality. Combining all the exploration, gathering, and crafting elements that make Minecraft one of the best sandbox games with the ability to take off and fly straight to other worlds in a style reminiscent of No Man’s Sky, it’s now cheaper than ever thanks to a new Steam sale, making it an ideal time to suit up.
I really can’t emphasize enough how much Cubic Odyssey feels like you slammed the blocky voxel design and worlds of Minecraft over the intergalactic exploration structure of No Man’s Sky. Yet it manages to feel distinct enough from both experiences to justify its existence. The ability to hop between planets adds a level of variety to the formula that you’d typically have to dig into the best Minecraft mods to reach, and that makes it the more appealing way to chill out, zoom around its environments in a ship, and build my base into a hub of production.
While you’re free to take things at your own pace if you prefer, Cubic Odyssey drives you forward with a narrative centered around a strange galactic infection known as the Red Darkness. This creates a tremendous visual when you encounter it, with vibrant crimson blocks swirling and shifting before your eyes. Capable of mutating wildlife and spreading across entire planets, you’ll need to figure out how to cleanse its effects – or, if you prefer, you can encourage the Red Darkness to thrive.
Since launch, developer Atypical Games has continued to build on the Cubic Odyssey experience with various updates, and launched the ability to run your own dedicated server in mid-October. It’s just dropped a Halloween-themed overhaul this week, although you’re free to toggle the mode off via the settings menu if you’re already pumpkined out. The patch has polished up a lot of the multiplayer functionality, too, and with such a hefty saving at the moment it’s a good chance to grab it if your friend group is looking for a new co-op game to try.
Cubic Odyssey is 40% off on Steam until Friday November 14, so expect to pay just $14.99 / £12.59 for your copy. Grab it here or try the demo first if you’ve been craving a fresh adventure among the stars.
