If you’ve been waiting for a new Starcraft game, it looks like your prayers have finally been answered. A new report alleges that Nexon, the South Korean publisher behind games like The First Descendant and Dave the Diver, is working with Blizzard on a new entry in the sci-fi RTS series, after entering a bidding war for the IP. Starcraft isn’t the only Blizzard series Nexon is working on, either, as it’s also being reported that the studio is helping to release ‘Overwatch Mobile.’
Earlier this year, Asia Today reported that the Starcraft IP was up for grabs. Four major videogame companies – Nexon, Netmarble, Krafton, and NCSoft – supposedly put their names forward to work on the iconic RTS game series’ next venture, but it’s been quiet since then.
Now, months after the initial report, MTN is claiming that Nexon has won the bidding war for Starcraft, and is set to work with Blizzard to develop content within that universe. With the last major mainline game in the series being Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void in 2015, there’s been a decade of nostalgic build-up since then. We did get Starcraft: Remastered in 2017, sure, but we haven’t had anything strictly new since.
MTN claims that some bidding proposals for Starcraft didn’t place restrictions on the genre and content type, although it wasn’t stipulated what type of bid Nexon submitted. So, we could very well be getting Starcraft games that step outside the RTS genre, but only time will tell.
As for Overwatch Mobile, that isn’t what you think it is. MTN says it’s being developed by Blizzard as a MOBA spinoff of the hero shooter, and that Nexon has secured the Korean and Japanese service rights for the game. As for the future of Starcraft, though, we’ll just have to wait and see.
