How do you increase your inventory space in Hytale? Unlike in Minecraft, you can increase your bag size in Hytale by doing what you do best – crafting. It’s not quite as simple as gathering a few bits of fabric to sew onto your backpack, but it’s not rocket science, either. If anything, it gives you something to work towards in the early game. And it keeps going.
Increasing the size of your inventory in Hytale serves one major purpose – it decreases the number of times you need to head back to resupply or bank surplus items, freeing you up to smack more rocks and build more bases before messing with stacks of stone, wood, and food. Think there must be a better way? With how customizable Hytale is, Hytale mods may be able to make your inventory size concerns a thing of the past.
How to increase Hytale inventory space
To increase your inventory space in Hytale, you first need to unlock the Backpack. That’s right – your inventory is just an inventory until you actually unlock the Backpack. This recipe unlocks automatically at Workbench Tier 2, which takes the following items:
- 30x Copper Ingot
- 20x Iron Ingot
- 20x Linen Scraps
Most of these materials can be acquired via shallow mine shafts and caves fairly easily. For the Linen Scraps, humanoid mobs above or below ground should get you what you need.

With those items in tow, open up the crafting bench and hit the Upgrade button on the window to the right. You should then be able to craft the Unlock Backpack recipe toward the bottom of the fourth tab with the following ingredients:
- 8x Iron Ingot
- 16x Medium Leather
Once done, you’ll have more space to carry around logs, ores, and more without having to run back to your base camp bank. Handy, right?

How to get Backpack Upgrade I
But that’s not all. You can increase your backpack size again. This one is equipped in the final slot on the right side of the character sheet screen. You’ll need to upgrade the workbench to tier 3 first, then grab the following items:
- 40x Cindercloth Scraps
- 8x Cobalt Ingots
- 24x Heavy Leather
Then, like last time, craft the Backpack Upgrade I via the Tinkering tab from the workbench. Slot the upgrade into the character screen and you’ll have a bigger inventory space to carry things on the go.
How to get Backpack Upgrade II
Still struggling for space? Backpack Upgrade II will help. For this, though, you’ll need to have explored the world of Hytale quite a bit.

Backpack Upgrade II is part of the fourth pack along the Memories reward path, requiring 100 memories to unlock. This means visiting Memories Statue in the Edge of the Echo early on, found through the Forgotten Temple Gateway, and logging 100 different creatures found around the world.
Once unlocked, hit the tier II workbench once more with the correct materials to boost your bag even further.
If you don’t have enough Hytale bag space upgrades by now, you might just need to learn to quit hoarding things. Get back to base, bank your stuff, and rest a little. Already looking to sit Hytale out until there’s even more to do? Check out the best crafting games to keep you busy.
