Ubisoft Halifax workers form a union

Sixty one workers at Ubisoft Halifax have successfully unionized, joining the Game & Media Workers Guild of Canada, Local 30111. According to CTV News, the certification went through the Nova Scotia Labor Board on December 18.

Employees at the studio announced their intention to unionize last June, but the company reportedly challenged some of the early efforts. After “a few hearings,” Ubisoft dropped the issue and a vote was held in December.

Lead programmer Jon Huffman told CTV News that 73.8 per cent of workers voted in favor of unionizing, with every eligible participant voting. He called the numbers a “really strong turnout,” and “a clear response from the membership.”

    Ubisoft’s first North American union

The studio was founded in 2010, officially becoming Ubisoft Halifax in 2015. Its known for mobile titles like Assassin’s Creed Rebellion and Rainbow Six Mobile.

The CTV piece ends on a distinctly positive note, quoting Huffman again: “Even though it’s taken this long to certify, we’re still dedicated to doing this with Ubisoft… We love where we work, we love who we work with. We’re in this for the long haul.”

Unionization was one of the biggest trends we reported on in 2025, and the most recent GDC State of the Game Industry survey showed that game developers are overwhelmingly in favor of unions and the protections they can help secure for workers.
