The Outer Worlds 2 Sins of the Past on the Precipice of the Future quest walkthrough

How do you complete Sins of the Past on the Precipice of the Future in The Outer Worlds 2? As your space adventure comes to an end, you have to make the difficult decision to commit to this quest and finish your mission once and for all. With the Protectorate’s research facility mysteriously reappearing, this area will finally reveal the truth behind the deadly rifts.

Once you choose to travel to Reconstituted Horizon Point, you won’t be able to leave the Outer Worlds 2 map, so make sure you’ve wrapped up everything on the quest list before proceeding. We highly recommend manually saving before you embark on this final quest, just in case you forget to wrap up any loose ends in The Outer Worlds 2.

Following on from the ‘A Complication with the Computronic Cerebrum’ quest, we now have the rift data from the Archive that we can use on the Protectorate’s rift anomaly modulator, a ship known as Providence. Sadly, we can’t just land directly on the ship, forcing you to investigate on foot first.

Investigate the disturbance at Horizon Point

You may recognize this area from your very first mission where de Vries betrays you and the other Earth Directorates, though it has clearly seen better days. As you head towards the objective marker, you will run into reconstituted automechanicals and humans along the way, but you can ignore them as you won’t be needing any of the items these enemies drop. Continue along the path where you’ll find a rift that requires repairing; fix it, and you’ll be able to climb to the raised platform.

You have to travel through the broken vent, but the right path is filled with sputtering flames and damaged electrical wires. While you can head down this route and heal any damage you incur while doing so, you can avoid this by taking the lengthy left path. This does take longer, but it will save you time once you activate the switch that lets you disable the hazards.

Once you’re through the vent, go down the broken path, being careful not to jump through the gaps that will lead to your instant death. Clear out the enemies, then walk up the ramp to enter the docked ship. If you have a spare Mag-Pick and your Hack skill at seven or higher, you can gain access to the cockpit, where you’ll discover that this is in fact de Vries’ ship. Make sure you read The Matriarch’s Warning note before leaving, giving you access to new dialogue options later in the quest.

This is where things start to get confusing: the object marker that says ‘Search for De Bries’ points towards the ship, but you won’t find anything there apart from the note. Ignore this marker and instead go towards the other one, going down the path that takes you towards Providence.

Once again, you can run past the enemies down this route, then take a left, and you’ll find a broken white door. Make your way through the building until you find de Vries with Helen Pascal, your ex-crewmate who perished here ten years ago. After explaining the situation to her, Pascal will ask you to end her life. Be warned that de Vries can be hurt during this time, so if you use a weapon that deals AoE damage, you can accidentally kill her too.

Now that you’ve met with de Vries, leave via the door with the red exit sign above it and continue down the right path until you find another rift anomaly. Repair it and go down the lower platform, fighting off enemies until you get to yet another rift anomaly. Spawn the platforms and kill the enemy located near the vent.

Travel through this passageway to find the Security Operations Monitoring Station, allowing you to disable the automechanicals that block your way. To achieve this, you will need a Hack skill of 18 or Explosives 10 with a Bypass Shunt. This isn’t essential but will save you lots of time, as these enemies can be difficult to take down.

Leave the way you entered and make your way to the platform above, where you’ll find a building containing a switch that lets you lower the bridge. Cross the bridge and prepare to fight the reconstituted troopers and potentially a Dragoon if you didn’t disable the security. With the path clear of enemies, you’re one step closer to boarding the Providence.

    Solving the equation

You’re able to access the Skip Labs room, but you will die within seconds due to the unstable rift in the center. Turn around and jump up to the platform with a red light guiding the way. There are two rooms off to the right, but they don’t contain anything of use. Instead, keep walking around the space until you find a board with the rift equations.

Depending on how your build has shaped out, you may be able to solve the equation if you have any of the following characteristics: Science 18, Professor (background), Dumb (trait), or Lucky (trait). Using this equation, you can disable the rift in the Skip Labs room, but if you don’t have the requirements, continue through the nearby door and down the stairs until you find a reconstituted adjudicator.

Defeat the adjudicator and turn to the right to find two more. At the end of the corridor, there’s a room with a vent that you can climb through to access the Sovereign’s office. Using the terminal, you discover that Henry Varick has stolen the equation from Cadet Aldermann, and you can find the solution on a board in the same room.

With the equation in hand, you can use the terminal near the Skip Labs room to stabilize the rift, finally gaining access to the room. Repair the rift and cross the new platforms until you reach another set of automechicals to fight against. Once you’ve dealt with these enemies, you can board the Sovereign’s ship.

    Confront the Consul

The first thing you need to do aboard the Providence is find the hangar terminal to unseal the hangar doors. Walk straight until you see a door towards your right; go through it and continue until you find some stairs. You will find the terminal needed to unlock the hangar, but watch out for the automechanicals surrounding the area.

Deal with all the enemies, then continue through the hallway where you’ll find a sign that says Lift Transport. This area is like a maze, so you may end up looping round on yourself if you aren’t alert to your surroundings. Go through to the Lift Transport area and enter the large door directly ahead. Inside is another Dragoon for you to slay, along with several drones that will continue to chip away at your health until they’re taken out.

Carry on up the stairs, being mindful to avoid the purple lasers that will damage you if you come into contact with them. At the very top of the room, you will spot a switch that lets you disable the security, making your passage slightly less taxing.

You’ve reached the second floor, the Science Deck, a restricted area that you shouldn’t be in. You can hunt around searching for credentials to avoid getting into any fights, or you can go guns blazing and blast your way towards the rift device. Depending on the route you’ve opted for, you should have access to Chief Scientist Monserrate’s Keycard to use the machine, either through convincing him or by killing him.

After using the rift device, you now have what you need to get to the third floor, the Command Deck. After a brief meeting with de Vries, she offers to join you as you confront the Consul. Before you head to the objective marker, be sure to search around this floor for tidbits of information, as they could help shape the ending you receive.

In your first and last conversation with Consul Emory Thoreau, you can either convince him to stop his evil plans or stop him in his tracks by putting an end to his life. To convince him, you’re going to need several pieces of evidence, in addition to a maxed-out Speech skill.

And that’s all you need to complete the Sins of the Past on the Precipice of the Future quest. With your RPG game adventure wrapped up, you should head on over to our Outer Worlds 2 mods guide to find ways to spice up your next playthrough.
