Roblox maker Roblox Corp is being sued by the State of Louisiana for allegedly failing to protect children, but the company insists it dedicates “substantial resources” to keeping users safe.
The lawsuit was filed on August 14, 2025, by Attorney General Liz Murrill in Louisiana’s 21st Judicial District to hold Roblox Corporation accountable for allegedly facilitating and distributing “child sexual abuse material” and enabling the “sexual exploitation” of minors in Louisiana.
It accuses Roblox Corp of failing to implement “basic safety controls to protect child users” and neglecting to inform users of the dangers they could encounter on the popular user-generated content (UCG) platform.
“For years, Defendant has knowingly enabled and facilitated the systemic sexual exploitation and abuse of children across the United States, including in Louisiana,” reads the suit. “Through willful disregard and deceptive practices, Defendant has permitted and perpetuated an online environment in which child predators thrive, directly contributing to the widespread victimization of minor children in Louisiana.”
Roblox Corp is also accused of repeatedly assuring parents that Roblox is a safe space for children despite failing to implement measures that can effectively protect children from “well-documented predatory threats.”
“This campaign of reassurance masks the truth about Roblox. Far from creating a safe place for children, Defendant designed, built, and maintains Roblox that lacks safety features to protect children from predators and lacks warnings for parents and child users,” continues the lawsuit.
“The end result is that Defendant, through its failure to implement adequate safety features and its failure to provide notice of the danger, provides the perfect place for pedophiles.”
Roblox Corp says no system is perfect but insists it has deployed “rigorous safety features”
This isn’t the first time Roblox Corp has been accused of failing to protect young users. Last year, Bloomberg published an extensive report that spotlighted an alleged “pedophile problem” after speaking with 20 former and current Roblox staffers.
Another report published by research firm Hindenburg claimed the company had been lying about player metrics while downplaying those purported child safety issues. More recently, Roblox was sued alongside Discord for allegedly enabling the sexual abuse of a minor.
Addressing the Louisiana lawsuit specifically, Roblox Corp said that while it doesn’t comment on pending litigation it felt compelled to “address erroneous claims and misconceptions” about its platform.
It dismissed the idea that it would intentionally endanger its community but acknowledged that “no system is perfect and bad actors adapt to evade detection, including efforts to take users to other platforms, where safety standards and moderation practices may differ.”
Even so, it said it is constantly working to launch new safeguards to protect users, as evidenced by the introduction of over 40 new features designed to protect its “youngest users and empower parents and caregivers with greater control.” It also claims it has taken an “industry leading stance on age-based communication” to provide a safer and more tailored online experience.
In addition, it said its policies and safety features are stricter than those found on social networks and other UCG platforms.
“Roblox started as a platform for children, and while 64 percent of the user base is now 13 or over, the platform has rigorous safety features built in,” reads the response. “This includes rigorous text chat filters that block inappropriate language and attempts to direct users under 13 off the platform or solicit personal information. Furthermore, users under 13 cannot directly message others outside of games or experiences unless parental controls are adjusted, and direct image sharing between users is prohibited.”
The company said it even collaborates with law enforcement, government agencies, mental health organizations, and parental advocacy groups to create resources for parents that will help keep children safe.
It then suggested the entire online industry must work together to provide better tools for detecting grooming in chats, but reiterated that it strives to create “one of the safest online environments for users.”
“We understand there is always more work to be done, and we are committed to making Roblox a safe and positive environment for all users,” it finished.
