This Day in Gaming 🎂
In retro news, I’m celebrating the 19th birthday of Metroid Prime: Hunters while remembering the mild carpal tunnel it gave me. Developed for the newly minted DS, its standout innovation was the incorporation of stylus-driven aiming paired with six-player ad-hoc wireless multiplayer, allowing us hunters to engage in fast-paced, Phazon-fueled deathmatches on the go. By blending precision touchscreen controls with diverse character-specific abilities, it instantly sold me and my mates on the concept of portable, hyper-competitive first-person shooters. We had an absolute (morph) ball with it.

Nintendo fans should keep an eye on Dead Cells (A$18.70), the rogue-lite hit that started life as a failed Metroidvania MMORPG. Developer Motion Twin scrapped the original concept and pivoted mid-production. Meanwhile, Blasphemous (A$9.30) stabs its way onto the scene with a brutal blend of Catholic iconography and Dark Souls inspiration. Such a gem.

Purchase Cheap for PC
Today, PC players should snap up Sifu while it’s free. This martial arts revenge tale actually aged its protagonist in real-time for every failed attempt, a mechanic inspired by classic kung fu film tropes. And Hogwarts Legacy: Deluxe (A$21.20) hides an early design doc reference to a planned “wizarding gig economy” system that was mercifully scrapped.
