    This Day in Gaming 🎂

In retro news, I’m celebrating the 22nd birthday of the Gameboy Advance SP, the flip-top bestest version of the GBA SKUs. Debuting at a launch price of almost 200 dollarydoos, it would go on to ship a whopping 43.57M units before being discontinued in 2009. My fondest memory of my SP: using it in conjunction with a GameCube Link Cable to play asymmetrical multiplayer in Pac-Man Vs. all night long.

    Nice Savings for Nintendo Switch

Kicking things off with the Switch, EA Sports FC 25 is a stunning 62% off at just A$34—a great opportunity to experience EA’s first football title since splitting from FIFA over a staggering billion-dollar licensing fee dispute. Meanwhile, RPG fans can dive into Bravely Default II for A$54, a title that builds upon its unique turn-based battle system, originally inspired by childhood games where players would “save up” turns before unleashing devastating attacks.

I dug the addition of weather effects like wind and rain, which genuinely affect how matches play out. It’s a satisfying touch and adds a new level of realism for offline modes like Career that feels long overdue.

    Exciting Bargains for Xbox

Over on Xbox Series X, Rockstar’s masterpiece Red Dead Redemption 2 is a mind-blowing A$20. That’s cheaper than a movie ticket for a game that took nearly eight years to develop. If sci-fi is more your thing, Star Wars Outlaws (A$56) offers the first true open-world Star Wars experience, letting you explore planets as a rogue scoundrel.

Refining the Atlus RPG formula of weaving tough turn-based combat into compelling social sim mechanics, ReFantazio becomes a beautiful expression of the real impact storytelling can have on all of us. 9/10.

    Pure Scores for PlayStation

PlayStation deals are equally impressive, with Star Wars Jedi: Survivor down to A$29. Lead actor Cameron Monaghan (Cal Kestis) did all of his motion capture in full Jedi robes, adding to the immersion. And if you prefer a crime thriller, Judgment (A$29) offers a gripping Yakuza spin-off. Its lead actor, Japanese superstar Takuya Kimura, was such a big deal that his agency allegedly blocked a PC release for years to control his digital likeness!

If Respawn makes a third game like Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Fallen Order, it’ll complete the best Star Wars trilogy in 30 years, hands down. 9/10, amazing.
